Masquerade series - A Study on How Children Live in the World

-Using mythology to cynically depict reality as fantastical realism.

Among the various perspectives from which 'Masquerade' can be viewed, some may see it as evoking a fantastical world or a realm from a fairy tale. The combination of children wearing animal masks with disparate elements will undoubtedly conjure fantastical elements. However, the strangely assembled everyday scenes, through various contrasts, evoke a sense of unease and reveal a cynical and critical view of contemporary society.

Since the modern era, the dualistic Western view of spirit and matter has established itself as the universal standard by which modern humans perceive the world. This dichotomy pulls humans out of the great cycle of nature, treating them as independent entities—a contradiction that leads to a human-centered and individualized reality, raising questions about the sustainability of all life forms beyond societal issues. 'Masquerade' views this Western perspective through a ‘numinous lens’ (Rudolf Otto) and uses myth to portray our reality in a series of fantastical realism.

The myth of Noah's Ark, which depicts a post-apocalyptic world and what follows, overlaps with our modern society, dominated by relentless selfish desires even in the face of crises like climate disasters. As indicated by the subtitle 'A Study on How Children Live in the World,' the work centrally features the next generation and various life forms that must continue to live in the world without a clear solution. Like Noah preparing for the end by building an ark, how might children and other beings facing a potential apocalypse preserve themselves and the life of the world? Perhaps the story within Noah's Ark, preparing for a great flood and preserving life to start a new era, speaks more of hope than the catastrophic outcomes created by desires, despite the unstoppable march of modern civilization.

In the face of a towering tsunami, I hope we can see the reality behind the fantastical images through the figures of children in masks, with bare feet and tender hands, preparing for the end.

가면 놀이 연작.- 어린이가 세상을 살아가는 방법에 대한 연구

-신화를 차용해 현실을 환상적 리얼리즘으로 냉소하다.

가면놀이를 바라보는 다양한 시선 중에는 판타지적 세계나 동화 속 세상을 떠올리게 하는 시선도 있을 것이다. 동물 가면을 쓴 아이들과 이질적인 구성 요소의 결합은 분명 판타지적 요소를 연상시킬 것이다. 하지만 낯설게 조합된 일상의 풍경들은 여러 대비를 통해 불안의 정서를 만들어 내며, 현대 사회에 대한 냉소와 비판적인 시선을 드러낸다.

정신과 물질이라는 이원화된 서구적 시각은 근대 이후, 현대인들이 세계를 인식하는 보편적 기준으로 자리잡고 있다. 인간을 자연의 거대한 순환의 일부에서 떼어 내어 독립된 개체라는 모순된 인식으로 인간 중심적이고 개별화된 욕망이 만든 현실 속에서 사회의 여러 문제를 넘어 모든 생명들의 생존에 대한 지속 가능 여부까지 물음을 던지게 하고 있는 것이 현대 사회의 현실이다. 가면놀이는 이러한 서구의 세계를 인식하는 이원화된 세계관을 ‘누미노제적(루돌프 오토) 관점’으로 바라보며, 신화를 차용하여 우리의 현실을 그려내는 환상적 리얼리즘 연작이라 할 수 있다. 

종말론적 세계와 그 이후를 그리는 노아의 방주 신화는, 기후 재앙과 같은 위기 앞에서도 멈추지 않는 이기적 욕망이 지배하는 현대 사회와 겹친다. '어린이가 세계를 살아가는 방법에 대한 연구' 부제에서도 알 수 있듯이 그럼에도 대책 없이 여전히 세계를 살아가야 되는 어린이로 대변되는 다음 세대와 뭇 생명들의 처해 있음은 연작의 중심 소재가 된다. 노아가 종말을 대비해 방주를 만든 것처럼, 종말을 마주할지도 모르는 어린이들과 다양한 생명들은 어떻게 자신과 세계의 생명을 보존할 수 있을까? 어쩌면 대홍수를 대비하며 남은 생명을 보존하고 새로운 시대를 시작한다는 노아의 방주 신화 속 이야기는 욕망이 만들어 내는 파국이 어떠한 모습일 것을 알면서도 멈출 수 없는 현대 문명의 행보보다 더 희망을 이야기 하고 있는지도 모르겠다. 

거대하게 몰려오는 쓰나미의 기세 앞에 여린 손과 맨 발로 종말을 대비하는 가면을 쓴 어린이들의 모습을 통해 판타지적 이미지 이면에 비치고 있는 지금 우리의 현실을 바라보았으면 한다.
